A Template For Bank Statement Analysis

Hello,

I'm not a spreadsheet man. Word processing has always been more my bag.

I've got some years of bank and credit card statement data, from which I'd like to create some pie charts. This has me stumped.

I have the following data columns:

Date: DD/MM/YYYY

Payee: Text

Transaction type: Text (DD/SO/Transfer etc)

Cost centre code: Text

Amount in: Number

Amount out: Number

Can anybody please give me an idiot's step-by-step guide to create pie charts from these data, please?

I'd like to be able to create them by date (eg, monthly, quarterly, annually) and should I ever need to, by cost centre (less likely).

I just want to see on what I'm spending my money each period. Some totals in the pie chart would be useful (as, of course would be colour differentiation). And a total in vs total out would be an excellent bit of icing on the cake.

I hope this is simple enough for anybody who knows this sort of malarkey.

Thanks in advance.

I think you will find Pivot Table the easiest, something like this:

To make a pie chart (or other charts, perhaps more useful than pie charts) simply select all the cells in a Pivot Table and in the menu Insert > Chart and choose the chart type.

To make a Pivot Table, simply click in the table with the transaction data and in the menu select Organize > Create Pivot Table > On Current Sheet, then drag the desired fields in the Pivot Option pane down into the boxes below.

With both Pivot Tables and Charts there is no substitute for just trying different things until you get what you want.
