Apple Pay Using Wrong Card

I selected the card I want to pay with from wallet. I try to make the payment with that card. On my phone it says the payment failed, however the card reader says the payment was accepted. I then get a notification that a different card in my wallet was charged even though I did not want to use that card.

I am in Spain and using a card from Australia. Looking into my wallet it appears it used my default card but still annoying as that card is aud and has high fees where the card I wanted to use was a travel card with Euro. Just annoying that I tried to pay with one card and it just used another automatically. I realised in apple wallet settings the card that was used was the default card so I have changed that now but still shouldn’t just default as there were sufficient funds on the card I tried to use . This has happened twice now since I arrived.

This has happened twice today to us. My girlfriend has two cards in her Apple Pay wallet:

A) Wise digital debit card (visa)

B) Westpac debit card (mastercard)

Wise is the default card. Westpac is the express transit card.

We open Apple Pay by double tapping the power button. The default Wise card is selected. We do a contactless POS payment. The phone shows an error but the POS machine shows a success. On checking the bank statements, the Westpac card was charged.

The first time this happened, we assumed it was user error. The second time, we were very careful and closely monitored what was happening, so it is 100% happening as above. Tomorrow I'll get a video of the process so we have hard evidence.

We're in Australia.

Again, not possible. Apple Pay will charge the selected card only. It will not randomly charge a different card. There is no way for it to do this. If the selected card fails it will simply fail.

Since you seem to be unable to entertain the possibility of something other than that happening it's very hard to help.

When you are open to the possibility of something else happening, we can try to figure out what it was.

How exactly did you try to make the payment? How did you choose the card exactly, what did you do?

happened to me as well today.

i double clicked to open wallet,

I have three cards defined - A (default) , B, C.

I selected a non default card ‘C’, changed my mind and selected back card ‘A’ (default).

Put iphone on reader to complete the transaction, got error on iPhone screen.

But the reader stated transaction completed successfully, and when looking at the receipt it used card ‘B’ !!

some strange new bug in wallet!

im using iPhone 15, iOS 18.5

This just happened to me. I was using tap to pay and it wasn’t taking my physical credit card because I don’t think it was set up for tap. So I used my phone for Apple Pay. I did not want to use my debit card. I selected a credit card, tapped it and it said payment could not be completed. However at the same time, the person received payment and I got an alert from my bank my debit card was charged. Pretty upset about this. Went to google to see if it’s a thing and apparently is. I know Phil keeps saying it’s not possible but it just happened to me and seems to be happening to people here and on Reddit. In the US.

Yes, I see how my sentence was confusing. The person I was paying had tap to pay set up on their phone. The physical card I tried to use with the tap symbol for contactless payment wasn’t working. So I had to use my phone with Apple Pay for contactless payment.

I know you all keep saying none of this is possible. But it happened again the other day to me at a Whole Foods and it keeps happening to people on this thread. Stop telling us it’s not possible when we keep telling you it is. You think we want to come on here and waste our time talking about this? It’s rude and annoying to keep telling us we are wrong when we are the ones who this is happening to. Just because it hasn’t happened to you, doesn’t mean it’s not real. Many of us find this thread because it happened to us and all we see are others basically being told they are crazy. And yes, I’m in the US. Would love to not be in this dumpster fire of a country but here I am.

you asked what Reddit threads:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AppleWallet/s/TYOHLYpqBu

https://www.reddit.com/r/iphonehelp/s/5dWtJKCc1m

And more threads of various other things such as the wrong cards being refunded, wrong card being billed - all on Apple Pay.

That s not possible. When using Apple Pay, you choose the card before completing the process, and that is the one that is used. It cannot and will not magically use another card that was not selected.

How exactly did you try to make the payment? How did you choose the card exactly, what did you do?

The charge on the other card may be for something else and just coincidentally happened at the same time as your Apple Pay failed charge, but probably has nothing to do with it.
