Disabled iPad User Bluetooth mouse cursor disappears when using keyboard on airplay

I am a quadriplegic and rely heavily on my iPad for daily communication and independence. Specifically, I use my iPad in combination with AirPlay and a mouth-controlled Bluetooth mouse as my main means of accessing technology. Because of my disability, this setup is not just a convenience—it is an essential lifeline for my ability to function day-to-day.

Device Information:

  • iPad Air (4th Generation)
  • iPadOS Version: 18.6.2
  • Model Number: MYJ62LL/A

Issue:

Immediately after performing a software update several versions ago, I began experiencing a major problem: when I have my adaptive Bluetooth mouse connected to my iPad and am mirroring the screen to a Vizio TV through AirPlay, the mouse cursor, which is connected through assistive touch settings, disappears from the mirrored display whenever the on-screen keyboard is visible. The cursor continues to appear on the iPad itself, but not on the TV.

This issue is not isolated to one TV. It happens on multiple TVs when connected through AirPlay, so the problem is clearly software-related and not related to the display hardware.

Impact:

This bug has significantly impacted my independence. Losing cursor visibility on the mirrored display makes it far harder for me to effectively use my setup. As a quadriplegic, my adaptive technology is my only means of communication, productivity, and independence. Having this issue persist for so long has caused me immense frustration and has taken away some of the little independence I do have.

Support History:

When this problem first occurred, I contacted Apple Support and spent 3–4 hours on the phone with multiple representatives, troubleshooting extensively. I was eventually told that “engineers are working on the problem.” However, multiple software updates have since been released, and the problem still persists. From my perspective, it feels like my issue is not being prioritized, despite its serious impact on accessibility and my daily life.

I respectfully ask that this issue be escalated and addressed with urgency. This is not just a small glitch—it is a major accessibility barrier for someone with a disability who depends entirely on Apple devices to live with independence.
