Issue with iPhone 13 After iOS 18.6.2 Update - Black Screen

I'm writing to report a critical issue with my iPhone 13 following the iOS 18.6.2 update. After the update, the phone's screen turns black.

I have already attempted the following troubleshooting steps:

  • I used iTunes to try and re-update the operating system.
  • I also tried a full restore of the phone.

During both the update and the restore process, the Apple logo and a progress bar appear on the screen, but once the process is complete, the screen turns black and becomes unresponsive.

I visited an authorized Apple service center, and they diagnosed the issue as a display problem. However, I find this diagnosis questionable because the screen is clearly functional enough to display the Apple logo and progress bar during the restore process. This suggests the issue is software-related, not a hardware fault with the display itself.

The service center is insisting that I replace the display, which is very expensive and, in my opinion, unnecessary given the circumstances. The cost of the replacement is even higher than the current resale value of the phone.

I would like to understand the following:

  • How can a software update lead to a hardware issue like a corrupted display?
  • What are the potential root causes of this specific problem?
  • What are my next steps, as I believe the issue is related to the software update and not the display?

I appreciate your help and look forward to your response.

Hello Rishu_19,

Have you tried the Apple Recovery Mode using your MAC

If you can't update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and updated to the IOS 18.6.2 with no update issue. I have not experienced any of the problems you describe. Hard to say what your update issue might have been, but I always do a backup to iCloud and to my Mac and do the IOS update using A/C power. So far it hasn't failed me.

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

Was/Is your device Jailbroken? If that's the situation, please be informed that attributing the issues to iOS updates may not be accurate.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

If you are claiming that after updating your iPhone 13 to iOS 18.6.2 you are experiencing a black screen issue, then logically this problem should be occurring across all iPhone 13 devices that have been updated to iOS 18.6.2. If it were a software-related bug introduced in this version, it would not affect only your individual device but rather the entire iPhone 13 lineup that runs on the same update.

Hi SravanKrA

Thanks for your reply. Below are answers to your questions:-

  1. Many things can cause phone problems
  • How did I get to know what the root cause of this is? I can only say what I have observed/noticed, and the truth is, just after the software update, my screen goes black.
  • I have also taken the phone to the service center for a diagnostic. They are just saying that you need to change your screen without any logical reason.

2. Was/Is your device Jailbroken?

  • No

3 It's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step?

  • Yes, I have the backup. The Apple service did a full restore, but it also didn't work.
