Will opening Photos app on new Mac delete iCloud Photos?

My daughter has a tonne of photos in her iCloud account from her phone.

She’s just inherited a 2017 MacBook Air for uni and I’m worried if she opens the new Photos app on the Mac iCloud will sync and erase all her iCloud Photos because it now thinks the library is empty.

I presume this isn’t how it works?

No. When she signs in to iCloud Photos, her photos will sync from iCloud to the Mac. iCloud is effectively the source of truth for photos. She should also get in the habit of backing up her most important data.
