I have the iPhone 16 Pro Max, with latest software (18.6.2). Mail that I read on my iPhone are not marked "read" on my laptop when I use it. Very annoying. I saw elsewhere about making changes to Safari, but I do not have Safari on either my iPhone or laptop (so far as I can tell). This has been a long time problem, not recent. There are no exceptions. Read mail is never marked read.

You need to make sure your gmail accounts are set up as IMAP on both devices. A POP email account will not sync with other devices and gmail allows you to setup either an IMAP or POP account.

Also, make sure you do not have a VPN installed as that can cause network problems that will prevent syncing.
Borrow a third device and sign into google mail in a browser. Are the emails online marked as read?

I did just the opposite and got it to work as it should.
I have POP enabled for all mail and it seems to do the trick.
POP was not enabled before, but IMAP was.
But I enabled in my Gmail on my laptop.
So now, I guess, both are enabled.
But I would not have otherwise looked at that had I not seen this.

POP is pretty much a dinosaur now, enable all as IMAP would be my recommendation too.
Whatever the end result, it is a gmail problem.
