Disabling an old iPod nano without affecting a new replacement

Hello

I have two iPod Nanos. One is old and no longer needed, and the other, a replacement, is brand new. And I have downloaded my entire iTunes Library to it. The old one still works. How do I disable the first one without it affecting the replacement, as having two competing iPods (with the same account) could be problematic? Is it as simple as smashing the former with a hammer?
