iMovie issue with full screen and going back to the home page

I have noticed when I switch to full-screen mode and to go back to the main edit page - I am unable to use the keyboard - esc / F keys and have to use the mouse and click on the  full-screen button (two arrows pointing outward)

Is this a common issue or am I doing something wrong.
