My husband and I both updated our iPhones to the iOS 26 today, my phone allows me to change the background in our text messages and shows up on my phone but does not on his. Does anyone know what the problem is and can help! We both have the same model phone, the iPhone 14.

Go into settings, messages, and scroll down to make sure conversation backgrounds is turned on.
I thought that at first but my sister changed the background for our messages on her phone and it shows the same photo on my phone that she put on hers even though I had something else. So she changes it back to her photo but it also changed on my phone. Im so confused 🤔
Yeah when I change the background on my friend and I chat , it changed her background to what I picked.. totally defeats the purpose of customizing my messages.. may as well turn it off and leave it alone..
This isn’t necessarily true. When I changed the background for messages between my wife and I, it also changed hers as well.
I did submit feedback to Apple based on my personal experience because you can’t personalize it to your own liking. In our case one or the other is stuck with a singular choice so we ended up having to remove the background all together.
APPLE please can you fix this. I want my own background of my girlfriend on my iPhone and she wants a background of me. We don’t want the same background in messages, we want to customise it so we can have our own pictures for our own contacts without the other person seeing the same background picture.
The new background feature in messages is “buggy”. My daughter has a background for her messages, I see it. If I go into a conversation that I have had with her, I can change her background without her permission. And she can change it. And so on. What is the point?
also, how do I select a background for myself?
I have the opposite issue. A friend of mine changed, not only her background but some additional settings and when she text me, it makes it very hard to read the actual text and my keyboard, only in her messages is really dark.
If I change my background it also changes my bf background as well.

Has anyone figured out how to make the backgrounds applicable only to the owner?
I really hope they send out a quick update to fix that. Super cool feature but not the way it is right now.
