Apple Pay declining new card on new iPhone 17 Pro

I just upgraded today to the iPhone 17 Pro. Since moving over, all my Apple Pay payments are being declined on this new phone. The same cards still work perfectly on my Apple Watch and my old iPhone, but not on the new one.

  • Same card, same bank, same details.
  • Apple Pay is set up on the new phone, but every transaction fails.
  • No issues when using the watch or the old phone.

Has anyone faced this? Do I need to re-verify with the bank or reset Apple Pay on the new phone?

I spoke with CBA, and they explained that the transactions were blocked on purpose. When you sign in to a new device, they send a verification request to your old device. If you don’t approve it within 8 hours, they automatically place restrictions on all your cards. To fix it, you just need to call CBA, let them know you’ve updated your phone, and they’ll remove the restrictions.

Just got off the phone with CBA. There is some issue on their end and they don’t know when it will be resolved. They only said the physical cards still work, just not Apple wallet and they don’t know when it will be fixed at this time. It is all triggering some sort of security response that is causing the cards to be blocked.

The annoying thing is there’s no real way to check it’s working except to try in a shop. Everyone thinks you’re broke when it declines!!

I’m having the same issue on all my CBA cards, all have money in them, no issue with funds. I’ve removed and added all cards again. 1st time I verified by sms, 2nd time by CBA app. Still get declined when trying to do in store purchase. Could it be that the transactions are showing as international when they are actually in Australia? I have international in store transactions locked.

No worries, many people think they are directly addressing Apple Support and they aren’t. Apple Support Communities are a user to user discussion forum. Apple is not here and will not be aware of your concerns.

The original post is effectively resolved with the bank admitting the errors are on their side and not Apple’s.

Can you please explain in detail the issues confronting you at this time?

I have similar issue, different bank.

Migration Assistant moved most of my cards over. But there is 1 card that failed, ICBC bank in China, been using/migrating same card to new iPhones each year for many years. Only have issue this year with 17 Pro Max.

Called bank, card payment network and Apple Support. No luck so far.

The same card, can be removed and added to my Apple Watch (linked to my 17 Pro Max) and iPad easily. But just can't be added to my 17 Pro Max. No error number, just say "Card Not Added Contact your card issuer for more information."
