I kept my old iphone 6 as a backup. The battery has now expanded so I should not recharge it. It is not worth replacing the battery financially. How can I remove the data from the phone before disposing of it?
If your only concern is the security of the data still contained ON the phone; that data is VERY securely protected by the phone’s passcode.
(Assuming that the passcode is indeed known only to you and not easily guessed)
You can be confident that you can safely recycle the phone w/ a responsible recycler.
Note that an Apple Store will always accept iPhones for recycling.

You need to backup your data before catastrophe strikes. If you didn't back it up, it's too late since turning it on or plugging in the phone could cause it to explode or catch on fire.
If the battery has failed and expanded, it certainly wouldn't be safe to mail the phone in for recycling, and even local places that accept electronic devices in good condition might not want to accept this fire and explosion risk.
Check with your local government about the proper way to dispose of the phone safely.
