Give the following a try any time you are faced with an macOS update/upgrade:
If Your Mouse Acts Up Before Updating macOS
- Restart Your Mac. Sometimes the simplest fix clears the problem right away.
- Turn Bluetooth Off and On Again. Go to the top right of your screen and click the Bluetooth icon. Choose Turn Bluetooth Off, wait 10 seconds, then Turn Bluetooth On.
- Unpair and Repair Your Mouse. Open System Settings → Bluetooth. Remove your mouse from the list, then reconnect it as if it’s brand new.
- Boot up your Mac in Safe Mode to see if this makes any difference.
- Crete a new user account. Log out of your existing account, and then, log back in with the new account. Did this resolve the issue?
You didn't provide us with any details on which exact mouse make & model you are using with your Mac. As such:
- Try a Different Mouse Connection..If your mouse came with a little USB receiver, use that instead of Bluetooth.
- Plug in a basic wired mouse temporarily until you’re ready to update.
- Keep Working Until You’re Ready to Update
These steps won’t fix it forever, but they should help keep your mouse usable until you feel comfortable installing the newest macOS update.
FWIW. As a reference, I use a Logitech mouse with my 2023 M2 Pro Mac mini (that is now running macOS Tahoe), and have not had any issues with this mouse with macOS updates or full upgrades.
