iPhone 14 Pro Max with iOS 26.0 bricked on entry to camera app

While the screen did resemble the camera app somewhat, it was total frozen and very dim. No amount or type of touching of the screen had any affect. Button based restart failed, siri was responsive but useless since the screen was frozen. pushing the left and right buttons at the same time and holding them for a few seconds resulted in vibration, flashing light and alarm sound. I went around in circles for over an hour, until I tried logging in to apple.com support on my computer and when it sent verification to my phone, it unfroze.
