iPad Passwords app 2FA verification codes not working

I have a Facebook account with 2FA enabled, I used the Passwords app to set it up like a month ago.

The codes worked correctly just the last week, today I tried to login to my account and entered the code the Passwords app generated, but now I got a message like “Wrong code, check the code or use another one”.

Thinking it was a problem with Facebook I tried to login now to a Google account with 2FA enabled as well, and got the same result. So it looks like none of the codes the Passwords app generates work anymore.

I’ve tried reseting my iPad, but still have the same problem. Is there any solution for this problem?

Thanks for the follow-up.

14/100ths of a second is pretty darned close. 👍 (And plenty “close enough”)

Did you possibly save and backup the authenticator “seed” ? (the long string of alpha-numeric digits made available when setting-up the 2FA code)

If so, you can simply delete the 2FA code in the Passwords app and re-enter the seed.

My only other “iPad” suggestions are to:

  • Perform a Forced Restart of your ipad.

If that doesn’t help:

  • Log “out” and back “in” to your Apple Account. (this is safe as long as you don’t change anything during the few seconds that you’re logged out)

If that fails, you’ll most likely need to authenticate into FaceBook by alternate means 🤞 until you can resolve the authenticator issue.

This situation is ALWAYS my top fear when using TOTP (Authenticator App) 2FA schemes. A single corrupted digit in the seed can invalidate whole the process. And without a backup of the seed, you’re sunk.
