What to do when audiobook downloads fail on MacBook Pro?

I hooked up my external hard drive to my MBP and started downloading my new audiobook on CD. On disc 4 track 4 it stops and won’t load. Haven’t a clue what the problem is or what to try next. Any ideas?

Check the CD for any scratches, blurred areas, fingerprints, dust, etc. Clean if necessary. Maybe even clean the lens in the CD player (use a CD cleaning disk for that). Shut down & restart your Mac.

It's also possible there may be "CD rot" at that point on the disc.

Have you tried copying that CD to your Desktop instead of the external HDD? If that works, then the problem may be with the HDD or connection.
