You'll lose access to Apple Music subscription songs immediately, or almost immediately.

How to cancel Apple Music - Apple Support

Original copies of purchased music should be unaffected, but if you were synchronizing purchased music to other devices using Sync Library, the synchronized copies may stop working or go away.

As for being charged, I think you need to cancel at least 24 hours before a subscription renews to avoid charges. If you were eligible for a free trial offer, and canceled the free trial after only a few hours, I wouldn't think there would be any charge.
