How do I fully cancel Apple TV trial to stop payment requests and remove my card?

I got the trial version of Apple TV and don't watch it enough to pay for subscription so I cancelled, so I thought. I keep getting messages telling me to update my payment details as it keeps getting declined but when I try to remove that card the message says I cannot remove because it is attached to an active subscription. I no longer want this subscription so how do I actually cancel it and stay cancelled.

You might have other subscriptions from Apps or iCloud + storage etc that need a payment method kept on file. Or the free trial period is still active and not yet expired

Basically it had tried, and failed to get a payment out of my bank account. This is because I only use that account for subscriptions and only keep enough money in their to cover the subscription cost. I thought I had cancelled, but clearly hadn't. So it wouldn't let me cancel until I paid the subscription that was previously failed. All sorted now.

I keep doing that but every time I click on cancel subscription it asks me again to enter email and password. I do that and it asks me again to enter email and password and so I click on cancel subscription and keep going through that process and so cannot actually cancel my subscription.
