1. Check the model and feature availability
Only AirPods Pro (2nd generation) (Lightning or USB-C) and newer support sound playback from the case itself.
➡️ If yours are AirPods Pro (1st or 3rd generation), only the earbuds can play a sound — the case won’t.
You can confirm your model:
- Go to Settings › Bluetooth › (i) next to your AirPods › About
- Note the Model Number, then compare on Apple’s site:
- 👉 Identify your AirPods model
⚙️ 2. Earbuds not inside the case
The sound feature for the case works independently, but sometimes the Find My app will only show the AirPods (earbuds) if they’re outside the case.
Try placing or removing them and refreshing Find My.
📱 3. Find My settings not updated
- Open Settings › Apple ID › Find My › Find My iPhone → ensure Find My network is ON.
- In Settings › Bluetooth, make sure your AirPods are connected and “Find My network” is enabled under your AirPods info.
🔄 4. Software needs updating
- Update your iPhone to the latest iOS version.
- Keep your AirPods connected and near your iPhone — firmware updates happen automatically when charging.
🔋 5. Case sound disabled or bugged
If you have AirPods Pro (2nd gen) and the case still doesn’t make sound:
- Put AirPods in the case and close the lid.
- Wait a minute, open the lid near your iPhone.
- Go to Settings › AirPods › Play Sound and test again.
- If still silent, reset your AirPods:
- Hold the setup button on the case for 15 seconds until the light flashes amber, then white.
- Re-pair with your iPhone.
