Some recent versions of Office were forcing OneDrive for any unsaved files, IIRC.

Microsoft 365 / Office / Copilot / Word is a third-party app. Check for updates, and then check with the Microsoft support forums.

Whether this is an Office bug or an issue with macOS 26, Microsoft is in the best position to address it or to report it to Apple.

There are some fine alternative apps available that can read and write Office documents and that don’t involve Microsoft apps, as well. LibreOffice, and the Apple iWork apps can read and write many Office documents, too.

By default, Word does not autosave open documents. You need to select that in Word Preferences > Save panel:

I do not use OneDrive and my documents are saved on the local drive.

That Microsoft can then vacuum up OneDrive contents for AI/LLM/Copilot training would not surprise.

Have not seen this personally. Are the files in question saved locally or to a cloud location (e.g., OneDrive)?
