Having problems with opening the control center while on FaceTime.

I’ve recently updated my iPad and iPhone to the newest iOS and I’m having a problem. When I’m not on FaceTime I can open up my control center with no problem but while on FaceTime when I try to open it, my screen freezes up and I can’t interact with it. Then the screen turns black with a white loading cog. Then the device turns off then on again but I still can’t use the control center because it’s going to happen again.
