I can’t add credit or debit cards in apple Wallet.

I have been trying to re-add cards to Apple Pay/ wallet for a couple of weeks now and all the app says is ‘card not added contact card issuer’. I’ve contacted them and they say there is not an issue at their end.

I have removed all existing cards including loyalty cards and deleted the app, reinstalled it but still no joy.

Also the double click side button has stopped working. I have turned off and on the side button click function and I have updated my phone with the latest update.

my wife’s apple wallet works fine, what am I missing?

iPhone 15, iOS 18

there was an option to use previous cards but again that didn’t work 🤪

Hi, Apple is not a bank and does not verify, you, your device or your payment methods. Only the issuing bank can perform the verifications. Cards in your Wallet are managed by the issuing bank and are updated by the bank in most cases. The cards in your Apple Wallet use different account number, expiration dates and security codes from the physical cards. This allows you access to your funds even if your physical is compromised.

The fraud alert at one of the banks or Payment Network Operators (Visa, Mastercard, American Express etc.) is causing the issue. Your banks will need to work with the PNO’s to resolve the fraud alert. Without intervention on your part and the banks, a fraud alert may prevent adding your cards to Apple Pay for up to a year. You can read about a similar experience at the link I’m sharing below.

First tier support from the card issuer rarely is able to resolve the problem and it will not to be escalated to a higher tier where they will be able to provision the card for your device, especially if you had previously had the card added where that token has already been issued. You need to receive the unique token from the card issuer in order to add the card to your wallet and if the issuer is not sending you that token, you will see the message that the card cannot be added. There are other checks that the card issuer will do to verify information, but they are the only ones that will be able to tell you why they are not issuing you the token to add your card to the wallet.

Unfortunately that is how the support works for many companies where first tier is rewarded for resolving the problem and if they do not know the answer it works out better for them to blame something else or say there is no problem on their end, instead of escalating to someone that can resolve the problem.

Gotcha. Thanks for the reply.

All I can say is follow the instructions Mac Jim ID provided.

Tier 1 banking CSRs almost universally have no clue about how ApplePay works, much less what needs to occur when it fails.

However, your issuer is your ONLY access into the vast — and largely unseen / little understood — payments processing industry. Just be politely firm and insistent.

You ARE after all their customer.

If interested in more of the “techie” details, this “how it works” primer can help make you a “more informed customer” when dealing with your banks.
