Mac to TV/Apple TV not working.

I can view the program I watch to watch on my Mac desktop and MacBook, but when I try to mirror to my TV I get sound but no visual, just a black screen. I tried hooking my MacBook up to the TV via USB to USB and I got a few minutes of audio and video before the black screen came back. I have also tried USB on Macbook to HDMI on the TV and get the same issue.
