use option-return to insert a return within the cell.

You can use Option-return within a formula to break the formula into multiple lines. This can often make complex formulas easier to read since our brain logically breaks functions into steps based on the line breaks, e.g.:

but I don't see why this would add 4 blank lines to your formula, or the result.

It works fine when entering text into a cell, but when I tried it within a formula it added 4 blank lines before showing the next line. Thanks for the reply but I decided this isn't what I need.
