You had to either know what screen or folder they were on, or search manually by scrolling.

Now you just need to search manually.

Alternatively, you can create aliases of the apps you use often and stick them in a folder. You can drag the folder onto the dock and create a pseudo launchpad. You can add sub folders to that folder for organization if needed through Finder.
