DNG Files - view thumbnails in Finder

DNG and RAW Images taken with various apps on iPhone do not show as Icons/Thumbnails in Finder. I can see them fine in photo editing apps but not in Finder Icon view. I am Using Tahoe 26.0.1 and have seen many previous iterations of this question on this forum going back to 2014 and each one says the next update will solve the issue. We are 11 years down the track with Tahoe being the latest OS and it is still a problem. Are Apple ever going to solve this?

Found the problem!!! Here's an extract from Reeflex:

The issue is related to the fact that Pro Camera does not embed a thumbnail in the DNG file. We intentionally did this to not confuse users, since if a thumbnail is present, the Photo’s app will only show the JPG preview and you only access the RAW data if you try to edit.

In previous versions, this was not a problem in the Mac’s finder, as it could still generate the thumbnail on the fly. On newer version, this feature was removed.

It is an easy fix for us, so you can expect us to solve this problem in one of the next updates. Maybe we will include a toggle in the App’s settings, to let user decide if including a thumbnail or not in the DNG.

It's sounding like the DNG files that these apps are creating are incomplete. I wonder if sending then through Adobe's converter (which seems to have no effect at all on my Lightroom DNGSs) would create new thumbnails.

How's Photometer? I haven't tried it. The unique thing that I'm using in Lightroom is the AI Noise Reduction--it's fabulous. I'm taking pictures at ISO 12000 and more, and Lightroom makes them presentable.

DNGs that I have, mostly generated from Adobe Lightroom, are supported and work with QuickLook, and they show picture icons in Finder. However, having "dng" on the end doesn't necessarily always mean the same thing. Have you tried feeding these into Adobe's free converter?

Again: Do RAW pictures directly from the iPhone's camera app work?

Hi Richard, the native camera app dng’s work fine. The problem files from the 3rd party apps are shot in RAW and converted to DNG by Photos app when exported to my file system. Lightroom DNG’s are fine but having used Lightroom Classic for years I never had a need to use Finder for file handling. Now I have ditched Adobe for Apples alternatives (Photomator).Had a few online support calls with Apple and it now appears that there is actually a thumbnail there, but not the whole image, just a black square with some random pixels. If I click quick view it shows the thumbnail.

I'm not sure what "taken with various apps" means. Does ProRAW from the iPhone's Camera app work? If 3rd part apps take pictures and use proprietary formats, then those may not be supported.

If you see someone say "the next update will solve the issue" then you should consult someone else. No one here knows what's coming, and those who say the do should be avoided.

The weird thing is that all the Apple apps read and display the files properly, but not Finder. I’ll have go at the Adobe converter to see if it can make a difference. Photomator is great so far, not yet a true Lightroom competitor, but maybe Apple will improve it (or kill it like Aperture). Photomator also has an AI denoise feature, haven’t given it a proper test yet, but doubt it’s up to Lightroom’s. Nice image!
