Huh? Oxidation on an anodized finish? First of all, you likely have access to a search engine. Use it. Anodized finishes don't typically oxidize to begin with.

With only one report on Reddit about the alleged issue, it’s difficult to say the exact cause unless he lets Apple examine it. If the Reddit poster doesn’t submit the item for warranty repair I’m inclined to think the 4 photos are photoshopped.
In any event the orange color is the result of organic dyes used in the anodizing process. If the affected unit was not properly sealed or cooled after the dye is applied, the dye fades rapidly in exposure to UV.
I used to work in a machine shop and we would machine aluminum into parts, send them out to be anodized and then inspect the finished parts before delivery. We would occasionally see defective anodizing but it was rare. That was 45 years ago and I’m sure the process has improved immensely.
A case should not affect iPhone 17 Pro models. However, plastic cases may contain agents that prevent yellowing and prevent hardening (plasticizers) of the polymer materials. If Apple or Apple’s suppliers have not done testing of these materials and agents it’s possible a reaction may occur.
I would think the companies doing the anodizing have tested their processes and finished products for exposure to common materials and agents. Apple is unlikely to supply such information. You best path forward would be to get in touch with the manufacturer of the case(s) you’re considering purchasing and inquire about the chemical stability of their products.
I really doubt peroxide has much if any effect on anodized aluminum or aluminum oxide because of the chemical structures of each component. Peroxide is rated at 100% compatibility with aluminum for concentrations of 30% to 100%.
I've read it was caused by Peroxide cleaning solvents, + the UV exposure, I'm worried of putting a full body skin, since I've experienced when removing my skin from my 7plus matte black the paint chipped off.
Same thing I said 5 days before the article published. I’m pretty convinced it’s UV. I’d have to see one in person, but I suspect it’s a cooling issue which affected the sealing and UV is fading the dye.
Jeff - yes, I suspect UV. as well and possibly a few phones somehow missed the sealing process.
It will be interesting to see what the final answer is although we may never know as Apple is known for secrecy.
Chattanoogan - you're welcome.
My 17 pro max cosmic orange discolored around volume and power button and above ear piece..Apple just replaced today Nov 1st in store with a new phone..only used microfiber to wipe phone down no chemicals…
I Googled iPhone 17 Pro earpiece discoloration and found this… I just came here after noticing the slightest, and I mean slightest, discoloration on my blue iPhone 17 pro max after removing the TechWoven case for regular cleaning (every few days).
I happened to be sitting directly under a bright light where the difference was clear to me for the first time.
I thought maybe it was dust between the screen protector and case. It wasn’t. I thought maybe it was oil. But it won’t wipe off. I used dry microfiber and modest moisture from my breath. FWIW, I never hold it to my ear since I use AirPods. It’s not damaged.
It appears like a thin silver line along 2/3 of the earpiece metal/frame above the ear speaker. It stands out because the other 1/3 is still as dark as the rest of the device. I can see it along the thin area of color you can see, even with a case on. It’s hard to describe. Very subtle. I will try to capture it in a photo. I can definitely see it though.
That was a quite well-written and seemingly balanced article.
Thanks for sharing. 👍
I’d hate to be any vendor involved in the manufacture of any batch of “substandard” parts which necessitate a full phone replacement.
Bound to happen when it involves probably 50 to 60 million units.
Agreed. Someone isn't getting their Christmas bonus this year.
