Can I get rid of Safari 26.0.1 and revert to previous version?

Running MacOS Sequoia 15.7.1 on M1 Mac Mini and updated Safari (I now realise mistakenly) to Safari 26.0.1. It has completely messed up my bookmarks (changed the order, dismissed folders, and added loads of fussy icons etc. I can't find anything in settings to fix this. Is there any way I can go back to previous Safari without losing everything in the sidebar? Can I do it safely through Time Machine?

Mac mini, macOS 15.7

did you see 6x6's suggestion to give terminal full disk access? you can use System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access. the commands didn't work for me at first either until i did that step. and also, did you ensure safari was completely closed before proceeding with the commands?

How do I go about laying a new sequoia install over the old one?

you can go to the App Store and find and download sequoia. after it downloads, follow the prompts to let it install.

Thank for any help.

you're welcome. :)

I have literally hundreds of bookmarks all sorted & arranged but the new Icon presentation makes it almost impossible to find things in a timely & easy fashion!

I agree. I was in the same boat until I tried the terminal commands. and before that, I tried and laid a new sequoia over the old one, and ended back on safari 18.6

I go to Bookmarks -> Edit Bookmarks.... 🤨

I tried that method as well. what a PAIN it is to use that method.

Thanks, and sorry for delay – Apple did not send me the usual alert of reply. So I chickened out of both your suggestions and decided to just bite the bullet and install Tahoe! Happy to say Safari bookmarks now back to normal and from the 3 dots at the top you can easily toggle between views and even the sort order. Unfortunately you are still stuck with intrusive and redundant 'recently saved' previews at the top for some reason, but I can live with that (I think).

you have a couple options.

the first option, you can lay a new sequoia install over the old one without completely erasing and reinstalling sequoia. afterwards, you will have sequoia with safari 18.6.

and the other option, you may want to look at 6x6's reply in this discussion. if you are comfortable using terminal, their suggestion fixes things for those of us on sequoia with safari 26.0.1.

I had a problem where Safari was constantly locking up after updating to Tahoe 26.0.1. I searched forever and found a post listing this link. Check it out. All I know is that it reverted my Safari back to 18.6 and after restarting my mac mini it works perfectly. This link is from Mr Macintosh. Safari18.6SonomaAuto.pkg I don't know why they haven't fixed the Safari with the latest update!!!! ridiculous. BTW I didn't lose my bookmarks but i guess others have.

The Terminal suggestion had no effect.

I go to Bookmarks -> Edit Bookmarks & am presented with the list of folders->Right click on a folder & am presented with the option to Sort by Name -> sorts in this list but not in the one accessed in the sidebar 🤨
