Apple Genius Bar Password/Passcode Access

I took my iPhone into an Apple Genius Bar for possible repair or replacement due to an issue and they requested that I enter both my passcode and my Apple ID password into my iPhone and kept it open when they kept it for repairs. Is this normal? Should I be alarmed about my privacy and data? I did not feel comfortable doing it, but I was told I had to sign in and I had to leave my iPhone with them. I hope this is not a security risk.

Yes, this is normal.

The password and passcode protections prevent Apple from running their diagnostic tools, for instance.

If you are particularly concerned about your data here, back up and then wipe the device, get the service or repair performed, and then restore the backup when completed. might also want to set a temporary Apple Account password and device passcode, too.

Jeff:

As one who is often caught professionally between “Year 2025 authorized procedural controls” and “real world” troubleshooting requirements of Year 2000 industrial power and control systems …

Are these opening passages of this KB simply unrealistic in practice: ?

Never give your Apple Account password, device passcode, or account security details to anyone else. Neither Apple nor Apple Authorized Service Providers will ask for this information.

For some software support, you might be asked to enter your device passcode or Apple Account password. Always remain present while the technician has access to your device.

I find the 2nd paragraph particularly unrealistic in the real world. (“Remain Present“ … where … at the tech’s workbench ??? 🙄)

Well, let's say that you refused to enter the information when you took the phone in to the Genius Bar.

I'm wondering how the technicians would be able to run any checks or tests on the phone......if they cannot access the phone.

I suppose you could erase the phone before leaving it for service, but this would severely limit the ability to troubleshoot any issues on your phone.
