Key presses are not being recognized in automated calls on iPhone

I get an automated call back from Apple, T-Mobile, Kaiser, etc. The call says, "If you're ready, oress 1." I press 1. It is apparently not "heard" by the caller. It continues, "If you're ready, press 1." I press 1. Nothing happens. After a while, not hearing my key presses, it hangs up.

I suspect that you’re inadvertently opening the “wrong” keypad.

(It happens to a lot of folks)

When your call is in-progress and connected …

DO NOT click on the “Home Screen’s ” Phone app icon. (Doing so opens a keypad, but for a new call; not a keypad which can send tones on your current call)

INSTEAD

If your current call is not already “full screen” make it full by tapping on the dynamic island.

Then a keypad will usually appear; tap those keys to send tones.

Once in Full Screen, if instead of a keypad you see a screen with several buttons starting with “Speaker” “FaceTime” “Mute” …

… click the Keypad button (lower right) to get to the keypad.

You can now send the tones with the keypad which appears.
