Safari OS 26 - Tab groups won't close

I have multiple tab groups. It's a good way to organize my topics. Every time I click on a tab group it drops down the complete list of tabs. That's not helpful since the tab bar above already shows the tabs, and I can't remove that tab bar. That means I can't see the remaining tab groups until I manually hide the tabs in the dropdown. I select 'Hide tabs in sidebar' which closes them, but they reappear the next time I click a tab group. There's no setting in Safari preferences to correct this.

This didn't happen prior to OS 26 and it's super annoying. It's an obvious flaw.

The main advantage of tab groups is that there's a list of GROUPS in the sidebar. I know what's in the groups; I created them. If I want to use that group, then they all appear as tabs. Seeing them listed in the sidebar is redundant and, worse, the list of tabs takes up space so that I can't see all the GROUP names — which, as I said, is the main advantage of tab GROUPS. This is a regression.

This is happening to me too. I upgraded my MacOS to 15.7.1 the other day and got Safari 26.0.1 in the bargain (what's that about?). I'm furious about this and hope that Apple will fix it now.
