Screen issues - Delay - Burning

Since the most recent update I have been having major issues with my display. I've done all of the suggested things that I could hunt down online. Nothing has worked. I have performed first-aid in disc utility, nothing. There are multiple issues:

  • major lagging
  • images seem to be temporarily burned, like what you see on a tv when it is about to go out.
  • or it completely freezes and I have to wait a couple of seconds to catch up

I did take a screen record but this platform does not allow me to upload here.

Post the complete DriveDx (free trial period) text report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper on the forum editing toolbar. The Apple NVMe SSDs don't have much in the way of health information, but it never hurts to check. The SSD health report from DriveDx does need to be manually examined.

FYI, the DriveDx doesn't install anything on the Mac when testing the internal drive & can even be run from the Downloads folder.

Another possible reason for the performance issue is a corrupt file system. Run Disk Utility First Aid on the hidden Container. Within Disk Utility you may need to click "View" and select "Show All Devices" before the hidden Container appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. Even if the First Aid summary says "Ok", click "Show Details" and scroll through the report to look for any unfixed errors or warnings. If there are any unfixed errors, then run First Aid again until they are gone. If after several scans, the errors remain, then you will need to run First Aid while booted into Recovery Mode. If the errors still remain after several more scans, then you will need to perform a clean install by first erasing the disk followed by reinstalling macOS & restoring from a backup.

There is one final possibility which I've personally experienced on at least one of my organization's 2019 iMacs....a bad Logic Board. The system was so slow it was unusable and the Logic Board was the culprit.

Get rid of this crap-ware via the specific instruction of the maker of this useless software

Third Party Security Software

There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX  Foundation and Permission Limitation.

The Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that cannot be opened by the User nor by Third Party Applications.

The Only thing this Antivirus software is protecting is the Bank Account of the Developers and for zero return to the User aside from the problems this software creates.

Protecting against malware in macOS

Mac app security enhancements are sufficient to protect computers from malware.

Adware and Malware can affect computers and are often downloaded from “shady” websites or developers who inject them into downloads.

It certainly does. Follow Owl-53's directions, evaluate that Mac's performance, run another EtreCheck report, and post it here if you still need help.

2025-10-26 CleanMyMac (5.2.7) - App Store

"CleanMyMac" is junk. So is "F-Secure". Rule 1 of Macs is don't install junk. Be prepared for the necessity of completely erasing that Mac and reconfiguring it from the ground up. Yes it is that bad. Merely uninstalling non-Apple "cleaning" scam products does not undo the damage they are capable of inflicting. Erasing the Mac is the only practicable recourse.

No Time Machine backup - Time Machine backup not found.

If you have no backup of that Mac's contents, then by definition should have no concern about erasing it. Correct? Please confirm.

Still freezing?

Performance:

System Load: 8.22 (1 min ago) 10.96 (5 min ago) 13.05 (15 min ago)

Nominal I/O usage: 0.13 MB/s

File system: 39.96 seconds

Write speed: 528 MB/s

Read speed: 1105 MB/s

Those r/w speeds strike me as very slow, but I do not happen to have that particular model Mac with which to compare them. However a much older Intel MacBook Air reports values much higher than those.

Disk Utility will not help diagnose a slow storage device. You might consider a third party utility such as DriveDX: https://binaryfruit.com/drivedx but be advised I have little confidence in it. That does not imply it is not a good product, but conclusively diagnosing a startup drive that is not performing well is not a straightforward exercise. The best they can do is support your own observations or other diagnostic tools — such as EtreCheck – and it's my opinion that EtreCheck is preferable. It measures actual throughput (which is all anyone cares about) vs. inundating you with copious amounts of data.

Restart your Mac normally.

If the degraded performance persists, next step is to download EtreCheck. Run it, then post its report in a reply to this Discussion.
