try checking Touch ID settings, restarting your mac, checking for macOS 26.01, reseting SMC (shut down your mac, then press and hold Shift + Control + Option on the left side of the keyboard, along with the power button, for 10 seconds. release all keys, then press the power button again to start your Mac.), resetting the NVRAM/PRAM (shut down your Mac, then turn it on and immediately press and hold Option + Command + P + R for about 20 seconds. release the keys.), clean the fingerprint sensor/power button, and test with another finger.

Note that the above steps apply ONLY to Macs with Intel processors, and not to Macs with Apple Silicon. For the latter, simply rebooting the Mac resets the SMC and NVRAM.
This bug has been reported fairly often here, affecting Tahoe and the two most recent Sequoia updates. Most likely it will be fixed with the macOS 26.1, which is due out very soon. In the event that it's not, bugs can be reported to Apple here:
