Mission Control / Application Windows woes

Hi there

This post is regarding the changes Apple have made to Mission Control / Application Windows and trying to revert back to previous behaviour

I had Mission Control set up as a Hot Corner (Top Right). When I put my mouse in the top right corner it would separate and show all of the windows of all of the open apps on the given desktop allowing me to either select the app I wanted to use or move an app to another desktop space. Brilliant behaviour one of my favourite parts of MacOs.

Now since the last update (26.1) all of this behaviour is broken. Now it seems Apple have split up the old Mission Control over 2 different controls; Mission Control & Application Windows. Ok, so I set the Mission Control in one corner & Application Windows in another corner, Now when I use Mission Control I can now only switch between the different desktops and when I use Application Windows it does 1 of 2 things, it either hides all of the open apps & says No Available Windows despite having several different apps open on that desktop or it will only show the window of the actual app I am specifically using whilst hiding all of the other open apps making it impossible to select or even see the other open app windows.

Surely this cannot be correct behaviour? Surely the whole point of the Application Windows option is to show all open app windows to make it easier to switch between the different open applications within the selected desktop? I really hope this isn’t the designed behaviour. I really hope this hasn’t been done to force us to use the absolute travesty that is Stage Manager. At the moment it seems that Stage Manager is the only way to quickly switch between open apps.

If anyone knows a work around or a way I can get the old Mission Control back I would be eternally grateful.

Kind regards

John

To clarify, what you are calling 'Application Windows' is formally called App Exposé. Personally, I have Mission Control and App Exposé set for three-finger trackpad swipes up and down, respectively, and I do not see any change in the behavior with macOS 26.1. Mission Control shows all the open windows in that Space (desktop), App Exposé shows all the open windows for the active app across all Spaces (desktops).

I have another Mac running Sequoia sitting on my desk, and the behavior is the same as on the Mac running 26.1.

Have you tried shutting down your Mac (Apple menu > Shut Down) and starting it back up?

What you describe as a change or difference is exactly how Mission Control has always worked. I don't see any difference at all.

Mission Control has always only shown what is open on that Desktop. Application Windows shows the open windows of the active app, wherever they may be.

There is an option in Mission Control to combine all of the app windows into a stack. But, that doesn't sound like the issue you describe.
