Purchased videos have buffering issues but ATV+ streaming is just fine

I have an AppleTV 4K which has normally been great.

However, over the past week or so, when we try to watch a tv show that we purchased (in the “Library” of the TV app) it pauses with the spinning wheel for minutes at a time several times per hour as if it’s buffering.

Whenever this happens, the first thing I do is whip out my iPhone and check the WAN and LAN network status via my router dashboard. It’s totally fine. I also perform a speed check always resulting in our normal internet speeds (which are more than ample).

Just to be sure, I updated the AppleTV to the newest OS, but still experienced the issue.

The AppleTV is connected via a cat6 cable through a gigabit Ethernet switch to my router. there has been no buffering issues when watching movies via Family Sharing stored on a Mac in my house.

I therefore conclude that my ISP and my local network are both perfectly fine. The issue is either in the device or Apple’s streaming servers.

The final troubleshooting step I did on the AppleTV immediately after the frustrating buffering experience was to stream two full episodes of Ted Lasso from AppleTV+. (Meaning, not “Purchased” in my “Library”.) That streamed perfectly fine with no buffering issues.

So what’s going on here? Do purchased videos stream from a different (slower, lamer) data center than ATV+?

Did you run a Speedtest on the Apple TV itself to ensure it is getting the same speed as other devices?

I streamed a full movie from my library last night and didn't encounter any issue, I also regularly stream TV episodes from there as well.

I think it would be hard for a user on this forum to answer that. You may want to contact Apple support and see what else they can run through to investigate and hopefully this can be rectified for you.

Those platforms have lower data rate and more aggressive adaptation based on network conditions so it’s best to check connection speed for Apple TV to confirm whether it is still a receiving adequate figure.

Also reboot ATV and router. If confirmed that there is an issue isolated to Apple purchased content then best to contact Apple support.

They would have tools to run diagnostics to determine if hardware issues are present as well as run tests to see if the buffering issues persist in store.

The options would be to contact Apple support and run through further testing with them or take the Apple TV to another house to see if it exhibits the same behaviour. In either case if it is confirmed to be an issue then it should be investigated by Apple.

Then they lied because they absolutely do have the tools, to run diagnostics for Apple TV as well as run a restore when the device is unresponsive. At the very least they could have tried your unit to see if the buffering issue persisted in that environment.

Anyways, it's moot now. Your best bet is to contact Apple support because they will be able to determine the root cause through their testing.

I have similar issues recently with my Apple TV device when streaming purchased content from my library. Started several weeks ago. I can stream through the Apple TV device all of my other platforms like Netflix, HBO MAX, Amazon Prime, and YouTube without the same buffering problems. Only my Apple TV content from my library has this buffering issue. Did you resolve your issue?

The issue is not resolved. I even went to the Apple Store over the weekend and brought my AppleTV with me, but they said they don't have any more diagnostics than the ones I ran.

However, I should mention that we are now having similar buffering issues on both streamed content via AppleTV+ (Ted Lasso, specifically), as well as similar problems watching a video from a shared media library on a Mac mini on the same network.

I no longer think this is an issue with only purchased content.
