macOS Sequoia change primary email

Hi

Mac Pro (2019) macOS Sequoia 15.7.2

I've researched articles including many Apple Support including Change your Apple Account primary email address - Apple Support

All articles say to go to Account>Settings>Sign-in & Security etc

I have followed instructions many times yet cannot change a secondary email into a primary one. I tried adding a new email but I don't get the option of having it as primary. I've also gone to web Apple Account and again similar.

I've made sure that all email addresses have iMessage/Facetime turned off.

any help appreciated

cheers, Claudio

What message do you see? Apple does not provide specifics as to reusing email addresses but it is possible it may not like the one you are using if it has been used previously for something with Apple, or you have to wait before reusing it.

Change your Apple Account primary email address - Apple Support

- If you remove an email address that isn’t an iCloud email address from your Apple Account, it can’t be associated with another Apple Account for 30 days for security reasons. After removing an email address from your account, notify anyone who might contact you on Messages, FaceTime, or other Apple apps using that Apple Account email address. After 30 days, another user might be able to associate that email address with an Apple Account for Messages, FaceTime, and more.

If you can’t change your Apple Account primary email address

- If you try to change your Apple Account to an @icloud.com email address that was created within the last 30 days, you will be asked to try again later.

- If you see a message that the email address you want to use isn’t available or is already in use, check that you or a family member aren’t already using that email address with a different Apple Account. If a family member is using that email address, remove it from their account, then try to use it.

From: How to delete your Apple Account - Apple Support

“Can I use the primary email address for my deleted Apple Account to create a new Apple Account or with another existing Apple Account?

No, once your Apple Account is deleted, you can’t use the email address that you used with it to create a new Apple Account for as long as Apple retains the one-way hash of the email address. For third-party (non-Apple) domain accounts, the one-way hash is deleted after six years. For other accounts, this is retained according to Apple's retention policy, which is reviewed regularly. In addition, you can’t use that email address with another existing Apple Account except as a rescue email. Also, if your primary Apple Account email address is with a Custom Email Domain, it can never be reused to create an Apple Account after your Apple Account is deleted, even if the domain ownership changes.”

Sorry, I am unfamiliar with that interface. Is that from the web?

Refer to this page for Apple Support for different countries ➔

Choose your country or region - Official Apple Support

Select your country (if you do not see your country, also look for "other" in regions; e.g., "Other Africa"), then "Choose a product". Click the "show" item under each category for more selections. If you don't see one that handles your issue then keep experimenting with selections until you reach one that gets you a chat session or a telephone call and get the representative to redirect you.

Yes from web

Just found this article update March 2024 https://techpp.com/2022/09/01/how-to-change-apple-id-email-address-guide/.. below main text that includes:

If you're unable to change your Apple ID, it could likely be because

you're trying to change your existing (Apple domain) Apple ID to a

non-Apple third-party email address, which isn't allowed by Apple.

To reiterate, Apple lets you change your Apple ID if it's from:

  • a third-party email service to another third-party email service
  • a third-party service to any of the Apple domain ones (@iCloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com address)

Not sure about this... Apple Primary Email I'm already using @gmail.com. I've tried other 3rd-party domain both @protonmail.com and an alias to my main Proton Mail account @passinbox.com

Have a severe hearing disability so avoiding a phone call to Apple. Haven't explored the possibility of a Chatbot Help.

still searching....

Hi Limnos

thanks for all the info...

I would like to change my primary email (@gmail.com) to a Proton Mail address (@protonmail.com). Firstly, added an email account and, later, would change it to primary.

To begin with, I used an "Hide-my-email" alias (@passinbox.com), which my Apple Account saved OK (and have used in many other sites). I also saved a 2nd Proton Mail account with domain (@protonmail.com).

I should be able to click the email address and edit it, including making it primary. I click and nothing happens. I've tried both on my Mac Apple Account and also the web.
