Replacing images in Pages not working

My original .pages document (bookRefuge-Print.pages) contains many large size JPGs as it is intended for a large print format. I have duplicated this file to (bookRefuge-EPUB.pages) in order to produce a much smaller file size version intended for a future EPUB conversion.

In this new file my objective is to replace all the large images with much smaller ones so that my final document will look the same but will be acceptable for my KOBO online reseller (100MB max). The images to be replaced have the same file name but reside in a different directory and are about one third in size. None of these images are locked or part of a background in any section.

The problem I have, is that when I click on any image, the menu bar at left shows the image file name and also shows the REPLACE image button....Then, when I click on the Replace button it opens the Finder to locate the new image, which I do..... Then I click OK for the new image....

But nothing happens!!!!!

The old image remains listed....no new image in the menu screen, still the old name...!

This function has something wrong for sure...

Any one with an answer? Apple?

I placed a 74 MB DNG image between two paragraphs of text. With that image still selected, I clicked the Image tab and chose Replace. From that Finder window, I selected an 836 K JPG image and clicked Insert. Without changing the visual size or placement of the original large image, the JPG simply replaced it and updated the name to the new image.

I never duplicate Pages documents within the application and did not duplicate this Pages document for this test.

Tested: Pages v14.4 on macOS Tahoe 26.1.
