Changing Apple Account ownership and payment method after organizer's death

The organizer of our apple account, which was shared with me, has died. I need to switch it to my name and add a new payment method.

i tried to go through Update Payment Details, but it wouldn’t let me make a change. Then, I went through Family Sharing and removed his name. Still no access.

You need to go through the actual organizer's account, you can't do anything from your account.


You need to log in to the organizer's account on an Apple device, or Windows Pc or through the https://account.apple.com website and change the payment method there.

You can also change the email address associated with it if required.


There is no further ownership to change beyond that.


If you can't access the account, then you will need to leave the current Family Sharing group and start a new one.

I am confused.


You say "our" account which implies you were sharing an Apple Account. In that case you should have the sign in information. But if you are sharing an account then why the need for Family Sharing? Are others involved? And who was the Organizer of the Family Sharing group? I presume you since only the Organizer can have a payment method and only the Organizer can remove somebody else from the group unless they do it themselves.


Maybe the issue here is really just with the payment method? Try adding a new one first and then delete the old one.
