Cannot get QNAP NAS to connect to time machine

Cannot get QNAP-TS219Pii to connect for time machine. Tahoe 26.1 latest firmware on Qnap device. Was working and I decided to start the NAS all over at square one. The time machine will not find the device on my network

Mac mini, macOS 26.1

The first time, I needed to actually mount the NAS share on my Mac using Finder > Go menu > connect to server and the IP address from the QNAP utility app. I could then select it in TM settings. After that, it just connects in the background.

It was working before but had a message that AFP would not work in future releases. So when I upgraded to 26.1 I figured I would adjust it. Hmmmm (if it aint fully broke …)

I open up the QNAP “finder” locate it and it finds it. I add to Tahoe finder under locations and I can select it. but ™ can’t find it to add disks.

The nice ui to ™ is missing, just to add disk which it can’t find

According to the QNAP specifications, Time Machine server appears to be supported on the TS-219P II:

https://www.qnap.com/en/product/ts-219p%20ii (Mandarin)

Time Machine server uses mDNS (Bonjour) and SMB, and not AFP.

AFP is not available with macOS 26 and later.

If you’re seeing messages about AFP, then the NAS is apparently not being accessed via Time Machine server.

If you have or can upgrade to QNAP QTS 4.3 or later, here is the setup: https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/tutorial/article/how-to-back-up-your-mac-to-qnap-nas-using-time-machine

If QTS 4.3 or later is configured for Time Machine server, and if your Mac Time Machine connection is using SMB and not AFP, and you have tried removing and re-adding the Time Machine connection on macOS, then check with QNAP support.

Mounting the NAS volume locally is not required, as macOS Time Machine should detect the QNAP NAS via the mDNS traffic multicast from the NAS. This once Time Machine server is configured on the NAS, and also assuming details such as the Mac and the NAS are mutually reachable within the local network and with mDNS available, and (for testing) no VPNs and no firewall and no routing blocks are configured.

You mentioned that Time Machine backups to this NAS was working before. What has changed? Was it updating to macOS Tahoe 26.1 from 26.0.1?

Does this NAS appear in the Finder app under Locations? Do you have, as a minimum, IPv6 "Link-Local" enabled, in addition to IPv4, on your local network?

If you can provide us some details on your current network, including makes/models of your router, wireless access point, and/or, Ethernet switches, as well as, how you connect both your Mac mini and the NAS to your local network, it would help us, help you.

Nas connected via ethernet 1GB connection. It does appear under location but only as the network address not the name I gave it.

Ah that would be telling me that the NAS is not advertising itself as a Time Machine destination via SMB using the Bonjour (mDNS) service.

The setup instructions, that neuroanatomist has referred to, should take care of that. That is, it should take you through the steps to configure the NAS to use the SMB file sharing protocol w/ Time Machine support, and the Bonjour Discovery Services enabled.

I don't use QNAP devices, instead I use those by Synology, but I believe the set up is similar. What I have provided you is based on my notes. neuroanatomist may be better able to assist you further with this issue.

Had the same issue after upgrading to MacOS Tahoe 26. I could mount the volume/folder and could retriebe it through Bonjour, but Time Machine said the volume does not support necessary functionality for TM Backups. Tried all sorts of things through the QTS and the HBS3 variant to create TM backups on QNAP NAS.

I finally ended up trying to "enforce" SMB3" by using QTS and setting both highest and lowest SMB-Version to SMB3 in the Advanced Microsoft Networking (SMB) settings. It now magically works! No guarantee this was the real route cause and that this also works for you.
