Is Apple postal trade in a scam?

Is Apple postal trade in a scam? I just received an email telling me that the IPad which I returned to them has a revised value of £0. The offer at the time of purchasing a new IPad was £30 trade in. I feel cheated.

iPad, iPadOS 18

No it's not a scam. The trade-in estimate was just that - an estimated value.

When the iPad is returned to Apple's trade-in partner, the iPad is assessed. If no screen defects are identified and the condition matches your declaration when obtaining the estimate, the trade-in value will be confirmed and refunded to you.

However, if a screen defect is identified, or if the condition of the iPad is not as declared, the trade-in value may be reduced - or in some circumstances completely negated.
