Is there no good way to mark up Keynote slides in presenter mode?

The existing markup method in presenter mode is horrible: no erase, annotations go away when you click done.

How can I mark up slides with useful tools (for example, the available tools when not in presentation mode)?

I fear I already know the answer, but geez, don't make me use PowerPoint just for this basic functionality.
