I have recently received a pdf document that, when opened with Preview, was absolutely filled with with computer system language and not the usual English, but when opened in Adobe Acrobat was correctly presented. Is there a fix for this?

Probably not. Unless, you can save it from Reader and see if it opens correctly in Preview.
Sounds like the PDF is in a format not everything can read. Adobe Reader does support PDFs others don't.
Thanks. I had already done that, and even upgraded the operating system to Tahoe, with no effect -still system gibberish. This is the first time this has occurred; I normally use Preview for pdf reading and now wonder if I have to change to another app instead.
Now I have also tried to open the document in Nitro PDF Pro, and found that also shows the system gibberish.
