tech specs for your Mac include:

  • 70W USB-C Power Adapter
  • USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable
  • Fast-charge capable with 96W or higher USB-C Power Adapter

You should always use an Apple power adapter of at least the minimum supplied with your MacBook Pro.

Re: need more space for the "Brick" portion.

Apple sells what is now considered an accessory AC power extension cord, so that you can have more total cable length and get the brick away from the outlet. It takes the place of the removable "duck head" wall adapter, which slides off.

Welcome sarinmd,

I found that Grant's suggestion of the extension cable solved my similar issues with "brick placement." I think I now have four such Apple cables. One gives me flexibility in powering my M4 Pro Macbook Pro in a section of my workstation that is a bit tight on space. Another extended an iPhone charger in the bedroom, one stays in my backpack, and one in the "Big Blue Bag of Tech" I bring on road trips.

The other plus is that the cable part is quite flexible for its diameter making it very easy to route.

I can see failnt writing on the prong end of the one you pictured. Is it an Apple product and, if so, can you find the wattage reting in that fine print?

I ask because yours looks like Apple's 20W charger for iPhone. If so, it cannot provide an Macbook Pro with enough power, and the bater wil have to make up the deficit.

If it is not an Apple product, that may explain the concern here that may have come across as the terseness you mention. We really are a helpful lot, but the risk of relying on non-Apple parts for some key functions—like charging—has a tendency to set off some warning flags. We've seen the good and the bad when it comes to "aftermarket."

Cheers,

Allan

It's difficult to determine tone from typed words, but both replies I've received came across pretty terse. No doubt I should have gone into more context detail before asking. Keeping it simple evidently isn't the way to go any more. Thanks for taking some time to answer.

So: My old MacBook Pro 15in (2018) was charged using the adapter/charger + USBC cable supplied by Apple. My new MacBook Pro 14in M5 came with an adapter/charger that is much larger and doesn't fit where the old one sat for years. Minor problem, but one I thought may be solved by using the old adapter/charger, especially as the new MacBook Pro can be charged using a USBC cable and not just by the MagSafe cable.

I came here as a first step. My previous experiences of Community support have always been positive and supportive. Maybe times have changed. My second step was to take the two adapter/chargers to the Apple Store and ask there. At least they smile there.

Grant Bennet-Alder, Servant of Cats and Allan Jones:

Thanks everyone for those helpful replies and suggestions. The charger in the pictures is an Apple Original and came with an iPad, I think, but I'd been using it to power a previous MacBook Pro. I only ever use genuine Apple gear. Too much risk otherwise. As Alan said, though, it looks. like it does not supply enough power for this MacBook Pro.

The extension cable Grant suggested may be my best option. I have one from an old laptop (possible an Air). Servant of Cats' link led me to one I hadn't seen, with full details of compatibility.

This was all very helpful. Well done people!!

Yes, Steve, and the advantage of that is it would be easier to unplug that the very tight connection of the Apple extension into the "brick". I've always found them difficult to remove and replace.

Once installed onto the Power brick, you have the luxury of around six feet of cord to use as you wish. Why would you want to unplug it from the brick? Did you want to torture yourself?

I just wrap the extension cord around the brick and put it in the bag to move places.
