Can I connect 3 external monitors to my MacBook Pro (14-inch, M3, Nov 2023)?

I have a MacBook Pro (14-inch, M3, Nov 2023) and currently have one external monitor attached via the HDMI port. My model has only 2 Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) plugs next to the MagSafe port (one being utilized already). It has an HDMI port and an SDXC card slot on the other side of the MacBook. Is it possible to attach 2 external monitors in addition to the MacBook's screen (a total of 3 screens)? If so, please provide guidance.

No. The regular M3 only supports 2 external displays and only when the lid is closed. If the lid is opened and the built in display is active then only 1 external display is supported.

No external device can add more first-class, hardware-supported display outputs. The limit on such outputs is based on the number of display generators built into the main System on Chip. The plain M3 notebooks are already more flexible than the plain M1 & M2 ones, where you could only attach one external display even with the lid closed. It was not until the M4 generation that the plain chip could drive a built-in display and two external displays at the same time.

There are workarounds based on DisplayLink and similar technologies that pair an external “stunt box” equipped with a “magic decider ring’ chip set with a special driver that must be installed on your computer. Neither the “stunt box” alone or the driver alone gets you any extra displays; they must be used as a pair. The combination can give you extra second-class display outputs, but these may come with significant compromises.

As Servant of Cats points out, there is no solution if you need full-motion video on at the additional display, except to obtain a computer that better meets your needs.

DisplayLink technology creates a "fake" display buffer in RAM, sends the data out over a slower interface to a stunt box with DisplayLink custom chips that put that data back onto a "legacy" interface. It is not a true "accelerated" display, and it can suffer from lagging.

It may be acceptable for a second display showing slow-to-change data such as computer program listings, stock quotes, or spreadsheets, but NOT for full motion Video, not for Video editing, and absolutely not for gaming. Mouse-tracking on that display can lag, and can make you feel queasy.

In a pinch, it may even play Internet videos (as one user put it) “without too many dropped frames".

If you are only doing program listings spreadsheets, stock quotes, and other slow to change data, DisplayLink can work for you, but requires you to make some strong compromises.

Using Three Monitors on a Mac:

A. Googling this: "three screens" "thelittles" "projector"

B. The Work Around:

From: Macbook Pro 2020 Dual Monitor Setup - Apple Community

Many aren't too fond of it, thinking it's more of a trick or a cheat, and not an official way, but it gives you three outputs.

Based on personal experience...

Getting Multiple Displays:

The J5 USB-C Dual HDMI Docking Station allows for more than two extra monitors. How so? Well, plug in a display projector the Mac using the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter and then plug the J5 hub with 2 HDMI displays (one 4K), and then you'll have 3 external screens. It all mirrors and extends. This works my Intel and Silicon Macs.
