I have a iPhone Xs Max with IOS 18.7.2 and an Apple Watch 6 with watchOS 11.6.1. When I try to update watch I get the “update your iphone first” errormessage. I have tried switching off and turning on phone and watch, did not help. Then I unpaired and repaired watch, did also not solve the problem.

when it check for an update then there is watchOS 26 as an option
but watchOS 26 requires an iphone that is also running ios 26
but with iphone xs

so it can not be used to update the watch, and if you used a newer iphone to update the watch then it would not work with the iphone xs afterwards
