I downloaded a document that I want to keep for the future so I exported it to Documents. The problem I have now is that when I go into Documents the file is grayed out and cannot be opened. Is there a way to fix this?

If you can open it from its location in Downloads try option-dragging it from ~/Downloads to ~/Documents, or anyplace else for that matter.
If you can open it in its new location you can drag the original to the Trash.
I don't have an explanation for the document's apparent status change, but it is not clear to me how you "exported" it either.

Downloaded it from where? Exported it from what?
What kind of document is it?
When you go to the file in the Finder and double click on it what happens?
If you attempt to open a PDF from an application's File Chooser panel, and that application cannot specifically open PDFs, then the PDF document would appear grayed out.
What is the files' extension: .ami, .rtf, .txt or .pdf?
What app are you in with the greyed out PDF file?
I downloaded it from an e-mail of someone I know was sending it to me (and many others). I exported it by going to file, export and then saved it in my documents. I’m not sure what kind of document it is but it is a small booklet with several pages. I can open it in the downloads but not after I moved it to Documents.
It is a pdf file!
Not sure why a pdf file would be grayed out???
