MacBook internal drive shows slowdown

Hi, I’m trying to confirm whether my MacBook’s internal drive is failing. Recently, even very simple actions like saving a plain text file, take 2–3 seconds before the Save dialog appears. This slowdown happened suddenly.

I ran Disk Utility First Aid on Macintosh HD - Data and got this message:

“warning: inode (id 14433879): Resource Fork xattr is missing or empty for compressed file
The volume /dev/rdisk3s1 … was found to be corrupt and needs to be repaired.”

Does this indicate my HDD/SSD has a hardware issue, or is this more likely a file-system corruption that software repair can fix? What should I do next to prevent data loss? (I do sync with iCloud permanently)

Not necessarily. We have no idea how the file system became corrupted. A corrupt file system could cause performance issues. Or you may have an issue with third party software.

To check the health of the drive, run the third party app DriveDx (free trial period) and post the complete text report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper on the forum editing toolbar.

To look for other possible issues, run the third party app EtreCheck and post its complete report here so we can examine it for clues. It will also tell us the exact model of your Mac which is important.

If First Aid is unable to repair the file system after several attempts, then try using First Aid while booted into Recovery Mode.

Ridding of All Error Messages:

It's NOT an error; it is just a warning. So, to get rid of all of this, you'd have to perform the following...

  1. Back Up: your Mac to an external Hard Drive through Time Machine
  2. Erase: the internal drive using Disk Utility in Recovery Mode.
  3. Reinstall: the macOS though Recovery Mode
  4. Migrate: items back to the internal drive from the Time Machine Backup
  5. Back Up: your Mac to an external Hard Drive through Time Machine
