Removing Extraneous Entries For An App In Privacy & Security Settings

Hello all,

simple question… how do I clean up the mess made by Microsoft Edge in the Settings app on a Mac under Privacy & Security > Local Network?

I would like to remove them with a minimum of damage to the existing system installation. Thanks!

Unfortunately, no, removing and re-installing Microsoft Edge does not rectify the problem.

Thanks for the follow-up. If we can't reproduce a problem, the only way we ever know if something works or doesn't is if people follow-up.

Officially, there's no way to reset Local Network Privacy. The only solution is to erase the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

I saw this suggestion on MacRumors:

To reset Local Network permissions, from Terminal in Recovery delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkextension.plist

Code:

rm "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkextension.plist"

Try deleting Microsoft Edge entirely. Then restart. If it works, please follow up and let us know.

Another followup question could be why does Microsoft Edge have to make so many entries?! I have provided feedback to Microsoft about this at their end, so you don't have to say anything here!

It's most likely the same problem that Google Chrome has. I have Google Chrome installed just for one useful trick it has. I run it maybe twice a year. But that was enough for me to identify what's causing the problem in Chrome. Chrome includes different versions of the same helper apps. Those duplicate versions confuse the Local Network privacy settings.

Then, we can only guess Microsoft's reply will be . . . ?

Who knows what !

You remain welcome just the same

Unfortunately, no, removing and re-installing Microsoft Edge does not rectify the problem.

However… using a new user account on macOS does.

So this is a problem in how these preferences are being stored, and managed poorly.

"Those duplicate versions confuse the Local Network privacy settings."

Hence my question about cleaning up the mess!
