Stolen phone & No access to Apple ID because thief changed the password

My phone was stolen. The thief who took the phone somehow gained access to everything. They went into my Apple ID and changed my password so I can’t go into my account. I can’t log into the account without the phone or the credit card they added to the Apple wallet. I can’t put the phone on lost mode because I can’t get into the account. It says it will take 5 days to recover the account. I’ve called and went into Apple they haven’t done anything to help. THIS IS RIDICULOUS there needs to be a better system with recovering your account. This person has had access to my phone for 3 days now and there is nothing I can do until Apple recovers my account.

I'm sorry this happened to you. But this is a user to user only forum, where doesn't participate, nor read for user feedback. There's nothing we can do speed things up with Apple. Apple stores directly don't get involved in account issues like this. If you're in the US, you can call Apple at: 800-MY-APPLE and ask for their help with this.

LD150 asked a very good question. If after your phone was stolen, you received a message saying your phone was found and all you needed to do was verify your account credentials, that was NOT from Apple. Apple NEVER gets involved in lost or stolen devices at all. If this did happen to you and you gave them your details, you were scammed by the thief.

No I didn’t get scammed. The person must have been watching me to see my password to my phone. You don’t need to know the password to Apple ID to change it.

That would be a surprise to Apple, honestly. In order to change your Apple Account Password, you do need to know your current password --> Change your Apple Account password - Apple Support

If they knew your Passcode, they could get in your phone, but that still wouldn't let them change the account Password without knowing the current account password. Apple Account Password is not the same as your Passcode.

So, you are saying that the thief somehow guessed your passcode.....so they were able to get into the phone?

Even if they were able to guess your passcode, (They only had 10 tries to do this), they would have also needed to know your Apple Account Password in order to change it.

Did you receive a scam message that told you that your phone has been found and you need to log on? That is a message that is trying to trick you into revealing personal information. Apple will never send a message like this.

It won't do any good to complain to us. We are users on this site......just like you. Apple is not here.

You can provide feedback directly to Apple here..........Feedback - iPhoneAppleApple › feedback › iphone

I think you are being way too optimistic when you say that your account will be recovered in a few days, but I hope I am wrong, even though it appears that you have been scammed.

Can't do that if had turned on Stolen Device Protection, or maybe the thief was near your home. And if you had used Face or Touch ID they would not have seen the passcode.

Well no. you only need the Passcode to change Apple account password. Page 1 of your link, step 3.
Thats why SDP was needed.

Well, duh. Yes, you and Lalaemmah are correct. I got my blunder for the day out of the way!

it still amazes/frightens me that this is possible (changing password with passcode, not you making a blunder 😂)
No actually that came out wrong!

LOL! I admit I had to read that couple times, but was confident it wasn't exactly what you meant.
