ios26 virtual keyboard not showing up with external keyboard

I updated two of my iPad pros to ios26. I have external keyboards connected via Bluetooth, but when they are connected I cannot access my virtual keyboard. The little icon on the bottom does not even show up. Is anyone else experiencing this issue and have a fix?
