Because that’s the way it has been since Big Sur. There is nothing you should do about it.

That is normal for the current macOS APFS format.

To see how much storage space you are using, select the Macintosh HD volume.
Ah thank you. I had accidentally changed View from "show only volumes" to "show all devices" and wasn't familiar with how it looked. I was worried something had been formatted incorrectly.
